Volvo in Motorsport

From Road to Track

“Volvo in Motorsport” is a special exhibition within our main World of Volvo Exhibition on the third floor. It explores three dynamic story areas – rallying, car racing, and truck racing – charting Volvo’s journey from early endurance trials to captivating moments.

Volvo’s motorsport journey began in the late 1920s, when the first Volvo ÖV4 competed under the Royal Automobile Club. From gravel roads to race circuits, every milestone has been shaped by precision, passion, and the close collaboration between drivers and engineers.

Motorsport was never just about speed – it was about innovation, trust, and teamwork. It inspired communities, pushed technical boundaries, and laid the foundation for Volvo’s reputation in safety and durability.

In this exhibition, you will follow a chapter of Volvo’s history where courage, engineering skill and a passion for racing went hand in hand – and still shape the brand today.

Truck Power

Volvo’s racing legacy isn’t just about cars. In the 1990s, “Bettan” – a modified Volvo NL12 –dominated truck racing with 1,000 horsepower under the hood. Years later, "The Iron Knight" shattered world speed records – built by Volvo engineers in their spare time. Proof that passion and performance go hand in hand, even at 276 km/h.

Rally Adventures

In 1965, a second-hand Volvo PV544 entered the brutal East African Safari Rally. Brothers Joginder and Jaswant Singh used calm ingenuity and teamwork to outlast the field – finishing more than an hour ahead of the next team. A legendary win that proved Volvo could conquer the world’s toughest roads.
